Pupils bring puppets to life!
Mowden Hall was recently joined by Russell Dean, Artistic Director for Strangeface Theatre Company.
After more than 20 years making and working with masks and puppets, Russell delivered 2 days of intense workshops, culminating in his evening talk, titled 'Masks, Puppets and our Inner Caveman'. Pupils, staff and parents alike were swept along by his enthusiasm and knowledge. His expertise was targeted at our Year 6 to 8 pupils, who all embraced the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and take plenty of creative risks.
The foundations of this visit came through Drama lessons with Mr Brooks, where pupils explored the world of Commedia D'el Arte; an Italian artform that is jam-packed with a focus on body language and non-verbal performance techniques. Originating in the 15th century, Commedia performing groups moved up through Europe as part of travelling creatives, arriving in the UK in and around the time of William Shakespeare, with public presentations popping up in the market squares of towns and cities. However as the actors only spoke Italian, they communicated to their audience through movements and gestures. You will also spot many similarities between Commedia D'el Arte and our traditional Pantomime style of performance.
Russell was able to pack all of this into his workshops, which were full of energy and laughter. Our pupils were exposed to a new performance approach that will certainly provide Year 7 with plenty of inspiration as they start rehearsals for their production of The Government Inspector.
Here are some of the comments from our pupils:
"I enjoyed and learnt how we used our body language to adapt to the masks." Sofia
"It was an amazing experience - I would love to do it again!" Henry
"The workshop taught me how masks can be both funny and serious. Lots of different emotions and situations." Martha
